As we enter into the holiday season with Thanksgiving leading the way in less than 24 hours I wanted to share with you 3 things that I am most thankful for...
Family... Because no matter what comes or goes, your family is still your family and I hold my family very dear to my heart!
Friends... Without friends life would be so dull and just think of how much love, how many hugs and times to laugh we would miss out on!
Freedom... I am very thankful for our military... For their never ending sacrifices that they and their families make for us on a daily basis so that we may live in a free country!

I Need Some Advice
I have the first of the Vintage quilts put together and I am trying to decide how to border it. I would love any and all feedback you fellow bloggers would give to me.
I am in the mind of adding a white inner border, the same size as the white border around the vintage squares, and then add a larger black border to finish the quilt off.
Would you add the white border or just add a final black border and be done with it?
or would you leave the quilt as is with the 2 inch border already in place by the border that goes around the block itself?
Thank you for all of your replies. :)

Gifts From Friends!
My mail carrier has been laden down with packages for me this week and today was no exception! I have 2 wonderful friends, Riane and her daughter Brechje, and we both love sending each other things from time to time. Today I received a wonderful package from the Netherlands and like all my other packages, it was full of things sure to delight me!
A pig postcard...and pig coasters sure put a huge smile on my face! A handmade card, noteboard, and a beautiful field of tulips on another postcard made this a fantastic gift! Thank you so much Riane and Brechje!!
My friend Lisa is from New York and she sent in one of the quilts for my birthday collection. I found this sweet pig wrapped up in tissue paper and hiding in the cool tote!! isn't he adorable! he is a watering can but I'll not use him for that! he is going to sit in the 4 season porch with the rest of our pigs! Hang out and have a party, that's what he will do!
And last but certainly not least are a few things my bestest friend Elizabeth from Massachusetts has sent me. We are members of a private blog where there are 12 women making things for each other every 6 weeks. This past period Elizabeth had my name and this is what I received from her. I just love wool projects and this Christmas mini quilt will be proudly displayed in our home over the holiday season! The small fall candle mat is already in use and so is the pincushion! (I need to help Ely set herself up a blog so you all can meet her)
Aren't friends just the best thing in the world!!!

The Big 5-0, Birthday Wishes & Charity Quilts!
Bumping this up in hopes to get more people to sign on! :)
I have a birthday wish!!!..... and it involves some beautiful children!!! Central Children's Home is in the neighboring town where I live. I wanted to take some charity quilts over to present to some of the children but the head mistress of the school wants me to bring a quilt for every child there at one time, if I bring any at all. I do not have that many quilts on hand at this time. These children are all teenagers so the quilts need to be at least 54 x 70, or larger, to begin with and I surely don't have that many in that size.
I am turning the BIG 50 in November of this year! Can I get 50 quilters to agree to send me a finished quilt, at least 54 x 70, or larger, by November 21st??? If I can get this many helpers to volunteer to send finished quilts, then I can take all of these children a quilt and let them know someone cares about them. I am already working with the Masonic Home for Children but this 2nd orphanage has not been on the receiving end because of their special request. So, can you help me put a smile on these children's faces??
If you would like to participate, please click my Email link over on the right sidebar of the blog and send me an email with "Birthday Wish - charity quilt project" as your subject line. I will respond with my address.
Please post this on your blogs and ask your friends to keep passing it on...The more blogs this reaches, the better chance my birthday wish will come true!
Thanks so much to the ones who will help me make this birthday wish come true!

Vintage Tuesday
Well, my Vintage Tuesday post is pretty late today so I am going to post my progress on the vintage fabric squares that I received from my mother in law. I am only bordering them so I can show off as much of the fabric design as possible.
I am going to call the quilt, Vintage On Display when it is completed.
This post is also going to serve as my Fabric Tuesday offering on Quilt Story's Fabric Tuesday! Go on over there and link up a project using fabric! :)
What do you think so far?

There Is A New CookBook In My Kitchen!
I admit.. I am a blogaholic! I could sit for hours just blog hopping if I allowed myself to do so. But, as we all know, there is work to do in every woman's house so I try to utilize my time online the best way possible! While browsing blogland one evening I fell upon an amazing woman's blog! If you have never been to The Pioneer Woman you should head over there and check her out!!
She has a cookbook that I would love to share with you this morning! The Pioneer Woman Cooks by Ree Drummond!! This is the best cookbook I have in my kitchen now! And I have the red and white checkerboard cookbook that we have all come to love over the years! But Ree's cookbook is so fresh, new and exciting! The photography alone makes me want to sit for hours just reading through it! I am going to give you a few sneek peeks and then you must get over to her website and order your copy! You will be glad that you did! :)
I grew up on a cattle farm myself, however it wasn't a working ranch like Ree's. My granddaddy ran a herd of cattle and raised a litter of pigs. He loved going to the sale barn and I was always riding in the front seat of his truck every chance that I got! Farmers trusted my granddaddy's judgement where cattle were concerned so it wasn't long before he was buying and selling for others! I was always in awe of my granddaddy as I sat there looking up at him watching to see if he was going to tip the brim of his hat if he got outbid. He was my hero! When I opened Ree's cookbook so many memories of my granddaddy's farm came rushing back! I am so glad that I own a copy and will use it often!
Just look at this scrambled egg dish called Migas! If this photo doesn't make you want to hop right into the kitchen and cook this dish up, then well...maybe you just aren't hungry at the moment!
Next up to make your mouth water is her fantastic Fried Chicken!! I will be trying this recipe out this week! My hubby loves fried chicken... He could eat it every day, 3 meals a day.. I kid you not!! And I had to show a sneek peek of the opposite page!
And we all know what goes with fried chicken!! MACARONI AND CHEESE!! Yes, it was a staple in our house while I was growing up and I cook it occasionally for hubby. He didn't grow up with it like I did but he loves it homemade. My mother always made it homemade..no box macaroni and cheese in our house. Ree's recipe looks delicious and it will go along with the fried chicken supper! yes, I call it supper too! :)
Now... I couldn't leave this out!... who doesn't love a real cowboy!!!
So, what are you waiting for?? Get on over there... You know you want a copy for your kitchen! Here is the link again: The Pioneer Woman!

The Voice Of An Angel!
I had to go into town today to take care of hum drum chores! I was sitting in the mechanic shop waiting while they changed the oil in my truck when The View came on television! They were interviewing Jackie Evancho, a 10 year old girl, and what came next had everyone in the shop mesmerized!
This child opened her mouth and out came the most majestic voice I have ever heard in my life! She is only 10 years old but her voice does not even remotely sound like a young girl of that age! You MUST visit her website and click on the video and listen to her sing!
When I got home from town, I immediately googled her name and found her site! I clicked on the video link and before I knew it, I had tears streaming down my face! Her voice will touch your inner soul! Trust me! Have the tissue handy!

There are tons of prizes available to some lucky participants so hurry over there and get your Christmas quilt linked up!
The quilt I am linking up is one that I made for my granddaughter Allie on her 1st Christmas! She is now 7 years old and is expecting a baby sister to come visit her next March! Join me on the front porch each Sunday as I introduce you to one of my friends who I have met through a mutual love of quilting and needlework. I will have the pink lemonade and cookies waiting for you!
Today I would love to introduce you to Judy from Australia!
This is one more busy woman and lets no dust collect below her feet! She runs 3 blogs and stays busy making crafts every day!! I have trouble keeping up with 1 blog, let alone 3! Be sure and visit Judy at: Judy's Fabrications, Judy McCarthy's Drawings, Judy's Fun Freebies, and her Flickr photostream!
I sent Judy a request to tell us a little bit about herself and I would love to share that with you now!
Throughout her interview I will be inserting photos of some of Judy's awesome works! You will have to visit her blogs, scroll back through time and continue to be amazed at her work! I had a really hard time deciding which photos to use! Her work is definitely amazing!!
This is what Judy would like for you to know about herself:
I have been a Junior Primary teacher for almost 30 years. I was a mature-age student
(went to college when I was 27 - graduated when 30). Worked in offices as a clerk before that for 9 years. Went back and did a Bachelor of Education in 1986 (graduated then).
(went to college when I was 27 - graduated when 30). Worked in offices as a clerk before that for 9 years. Went back and did a Bachelor of Education in 1986 (graduated then).
I went to Art School part time in 92/93. Did drawing and Art History.
My father was very good at drawing and my cousins on dad’s side drew, painted, carved etc. Mum did woodwork, great sewer, furniture restoring, cake decorating. She was always doing something creative. Everything she did , she did well!!!
I did my first doll making workshop in Adelaide with Patti Medaris Culea. Had hardly ever done any sewing. So nervous!!! I was hopeless at sewing in school. In grade 7 it took me from grade 6-7 to finish one pair of shorty pj’s!!! I was bad!!! After the doll workshop, I just liked the idea of doing dolls. Just kept going, and did a few more workshops, but realized I don’t do well in workshops so have worked on my own since then.
Found I loved drawing faces. Have had 3 art exhibitions. First one in 1993, I think. Almost sold out!! I did large charcoal drawings. Didn’t sell much at other 2.
I have done a small amount of teaching to adults. I taught a group for a year in Cloth Doll making. Think I prefer teaching children- much more FUN!!
I have done a small amount of teaching to adults. I taught a group for a year in Cloth Doll making. Think I prefer teaching children- much more FUN!!
I tutored privately in my home for 9 years. Love teaching these kids, as they try SO hard! Started tutoring while working full time( I had energy back then!!).
I have eclectic tastes - possibly because I have had to keep an open mind re: children - they come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and have used many teaching methods. No one method is right for all children. I take from here, there, and everywhere. The only style of art I can’t take to is Prim and the really ugly so-called Art Dolls which don’t seem all that well made (I am a bit of a Perfectionist!!).
Hey, I am “warming to this”. You will have to shoot me to stop me soon!! he,he. Hmmm….I have an active mind, and like to challenge myself. I love rich textures, and colour!! I love clowns, Jesters…theatre. I used puppets a lot in schools. I did relief teaching for 3 years, and used them greatly. They helped engage the students right from the start, and I made the kids laugh. I loved that. Children’s laughter is MUSIC to my ears!!
At the moment, I am loving the Zentangle type of drawing. I have always wanted to improve my drawing, but never kept it up for long. Now I draw practically every night, and feel I really am improving at last. My drawings are becoming more delicate.
I have studied Women’s Studies too. As I went on with my education later in life, I value education very highly. I used to work hard trying to motivate the kids, and often worked in “poor” schools.
I love gardening. I love a challenge - a bit stubborn. If someone says I can’t do something, I want to prove to myself that I can - even if I haven’t much natural ability in something(like sewing).
I once was a Governess on a Cattle Station in Outback Australia. Very isolated, and I taught a 7 year old. He only knew 5 letters when I came to the station, and did year 3 exams, and passed well by the time I left. This was when I was a kid of 18. I had no training in teaching - just thought I could do it!!
Not sure what comes next- I always planned everything until this year(Retired). I have no plans now. Just live each day. I play mostly all the time. Rush through house cleaning and I am fairly organized, so I don’t waste time. I have met fabulous people on-line, and I write to several, and swap lots of parcels with women in the USA and Canada. The American women have been FANTASTICALLY supportive!!! I can’t believe how much. I feel I don’t really deserve such praise, but it is nice all the same!! I want to improve my sewing skills - I always feel apprehensive when starting something unfamiliar, but I live with that! I have learned loads of things on-line!! Mostly American women doing the tutorials!!
I have no children - had 100’s in schools. No energy for any at home. Teaching WAS my whole life really!!
My husband is going to retire soon. Want to travel within Australia. I will be calling in to see people I have met on-line, and hope to do some workshops in small groups with people I have heard of on-line.
WOW!! Thank you so much Judy for such an interesting read!! You are one more talented lady and I wish I lived closer to you! I know your home is bursting with the lovelies you have made over the years!
And I wish to take this time to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful things I won in your giveaway! The package came in yesterdays mail but I was waiting to post them with your story! I love it all and the 2 doll pins will be on display with my other art dolls given to me by friends. I will be using the fibers in my crazy quilting and the Christmas card will be on display throughout the holiday season! Thank you ever so much!
Please, if you ever come to the U.S., let me know! I would love to have you as a guest in our home! Maybe you might do a doll workshop for me and my friends while you were here! :)
FYI: Judy gives due credit to all designers on her blog from whose patterns she may use in her creations. When you visit her blogs you will see these credits under each photo. :)

Treasures In The Attic #2
Ever since I laid eyes on these fabrics the song "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" has been running through my mind. Do not ask me why.. I am wierd sometimes... just a wee bit. :)
These fabrics make me want to sing "I was a layer cake when layer cakes weren't even around"! OK..Can you all sing with me... you do know the tune don't you?......
Just take a look at this!! 119 ! yes 119!! quilt squares cut at 10 inches and pinked all around the edges!!! When did this happen?? hmmm... Hubby's grandmother, Annie, passed away in May 1982 so it was at the very least, 28 years ago! Did they sell layer cakes back then? Does anyone know?
I can sit and daydream about our grandmothers quilting just as we do today and I wonder, "Did they do swaps together as we do today?" Did they cut up fabric, one square for each swapper, and swap it out getting back new fabrics in return, just as we do today? Did they make quilt blocks and pincushions and swap them out with other quilters too?
I wish I had thought to interview my grannies about their quilting days when they were younger. I bet they could have shared many wonderful quilting tales with me. Why is hindsight always 20/20?
Someone has told me these fabrics date back to the 1960's so they could be close to 50 years old!
I plan to make 3 quilts from these fabrics. The only cutting I will do to them is to cut some of them in half to make tiles. I do not want to lose any of the designs in these fabrics.
Do any of you have vintage fabrics that you would like to make into a quilt? Would you like to do a quilt along? I want to get these made into quilts right away so the quilt along will roll right along! Are you game? Do you want to play?
