What Is It Like To Lose Your Sewing Supplies?

But what is worse, "What is like to lose your home due to fires"?
I hope we never have to find out!

I have a best friend who found out this weekend the answer to this due to the fires in Mannford, OK.

My best friend Debbie lost her home and all of her belongings due to the fires in Oklahoma over the weekend. She is a quilter and when we both lived in Alabama, we would sit for hours on end quilting together.

I want to go see her when our tobacco crop is in the house which will be the end of October.

I was wondering if any of you would want to help re-stash her sewing supplies? Anything and everything would be much appreciated and all things will be a surprise to her.... she doesn't know I am doing this.

It doesn't have to be brand new things you run to the store and purchase.  Most of us have stashes that would make most people envy and things from our stashes is great!

If you would like to help, please send the items you would like to gift to her,  here to me.   Please write "For Debbie" on the outside of your package so I will know not to open it.

When Butch and I go to see her she will be able to open all of the boxes and envelopes herself and find all of the surprises inside. This will definitely touch her heart.

Please use my "Contact me" button on the right sidebar to ask for my mailing address.
Thanks so very much to all who will participate!

Smile

I am going to link up over at

to help spread the word!

I have also had a house fire, so I know how she feels. Is there any particular "style" of fabric or patterns your friend prefers?

Thanks LeAnn! She is a traditional quilter at heart but loves to challenge herself. All types of fabrics make her smile. :)

She is not a picky person.. never has been.. and surely wont be now. She will be in awe when she sees what you all send to her. :)

Count me in. I'll gladly help.

Years ago with the fires in Oakland/San Francisco area there were many quilters that lost their homes. Many quilters rallied to send items. Then the fires in So. Cal. hit and again many quilters lost their homes and all quilting supplies, but quilters from all over rallied to help. I'd like to see this tradition go on, as while it breaks my heart to hear of anyone loosing a home and their treasures in a fire, it does seem to help to send them a good quilty hug with items that they could use to help take their mind off of the stress of loosing their home, but also kick start them on the rebuilding/restocking of their quilting supplies. And, it is essentially a big hug from the virtual quilting community.

Thanks for coordinating this.

How sad for your friend. I'd love to help out. Can you tell me what colors she likes? I read above you said she isn't picky on style, but maybe there is something she really prefers. Thanks for doing this :)

Thearica!! This is soo special!! Debbie and Katie have been staying with me and Debbie brought in a few of her heirloom quilts that she did manage to save, we went through them and she said she lost her "stash" of "old hankies (handkerchiefs)" that she was saving to make a quilt out of. Debbie is not the type of person to ask for anything, this will mean SOOO MUCH to her!! It breaks my heart that they lost everything! But through all of this she has remained positive and maintains a smile for Katie, her daughter. Thearica you are a very special person to her, she speaks great things about you very often!! Love you and this amazing thing you are doing for her!! Can't wait to see you in October!! May your tobacco crop make plenty!! See you soon!!

Thearica said...

Thank you Ashley! But the thanks does not go to me.. It goes to these amazing quilters and their generous hearts! Without them, this would not be possible.

We started putting tobacco in the barn this week. I am looking forward to seeing you all after the crop is in but just wish it were different circumstances. :)

Yes I can chip in too! you say she is mainly a traditional quilter? I was just going through some of my books thinking I had way too many! Does she applique too? I know I have plenty of fabric here that I can part with some of it and do up a box for her. Send me your address :)

I had to read the posts before I decided to comment especially as I'm in the UK, and mostly make jewellery but our 'car boot' sale season is on and we occasionally find treasures which I like but couldn't use myself,as I'm too slow at quilting- my son's cot quilt is a bed runner now as I've only just finished it, and he's 20 now- I will keep an eye out for pretty hankies for your friend and send them when I have enough to make up a parcel

What sort of things or material would she need. I'm not really a quilter, but I have lots of beautiful fabrics for sewing and I would like to help. I have no idea what people who quilt need other then fabric. What other sorts of things can I send?
And of course I will need an address ;)

Thearica said...

Aubrey.. I will reply to the notification email that this comment comes in on with my address.

She can use any 100% cotton fabric suitable for quilting. She will also need tools like seam ripper, needles, scissors, thread.. anything to do with sewing and or quilting.

She also loves to cross stitch so any cross stitching supplies would be great... hoops, aida cloth, DMC floss and needles...

Thearica said...

Aubrey.. I just clicked reply on the email but it says you are a no-reply blogger so you wont receive my email with the address. Can you please insert your email address here so I can email you...

Do it in this way so bots cannot pick it up..

youremail (at) whatever (dot) com

Thanks so much!

Thearica said...

Chrissi... I need for you to insert your email here so I can send you my mailing address. You are a no-reply blogger so you wont receive the info.

Thank you so very much Lanetta!

I am sure we are going to collect way more than one quilter will need. And I know Debbie... She will share with her friends and neighbors who lost everything as well. She would have shared had she received only one box.

It is amazing at the number of quilters we will all touch through reaching out to Debbie! Isn't it awesome! :)

I just saw this from Lanetta's blog. So sad. I don't really do quilting. Mostly small sewing but I can probably range up enough stuff to send something. I'm on my phone so I can't see all the cool links etc. Can you email me at gracie.t_franklin@yahoo and let me know where I can send things and what all things your friend can use that I may have.

I would like to send a package as well. Could you please email your address to me at bethkinder(at)tds(dot)net. In addition to yardage I have tons of scrap pieces left over in various sizes from multiple quilts I've made that I just couldn't throw away because they would be perfect for scrappy wuilts but I just have too much and am overwhelmed every time I step into my sewing room. Do you think your friend would also be interested in these smaller pieces as well.
Thank you,
Beth
